Helping Students Prepare for Auditions
As tudents move towards increased independence in middle school, they may want less help than parents sometimes wish! But here are a few things every parent can do:
1) Read through the packet materials carefully with your child. Make sure they understand the commitment involved and are prepared to do the work necessary in and out of rehearsal. Read through the casting policy together as well, and make sure your student knows what to expect and why.
2) Encourage your child to prepare for their audition ahead of time. If they want your help- lucky you! But if not, a gentle reminder a week or two in advance, and the occasional "How's your audition preparation going?" will go a long way.
3) Encourage your child to perform their audition for others. If they won't do it for you, help them think of someone they will feel comfortable performing it for.
4) Give your child space. If they don't want your help, it's not because they don't value it- it's because they DO. Your opinion can feel overwhelming with something that already seems overwhelming to begin with.
5) Tell your child you are proud of them for auditioning! Sometimes knowing that you support their brave choice to audition is all they need!
